Queensland’s successful track-record as Australia’s screen destination of choice for domestic and international productions is the focus of Screen Queensland’s Annual Review for 2015-16, released today.

“The Annual Review showcases the organisation’s success and the many highlights of Queensland’s screen industry for the last financial year,” Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said.

“Over $203 million was spent in Queensland during the 2015-16 financial year from direct investment by domestic and international productions which includes TV productions, Wanted, Snake Boss Series 2, Hoges, League Nation Live and Blue Water Empire, and feature films The Butterfly Tree and Flammable Children,” she said.

International productions including Thor: Ragnarok, The Shallows, Jungle, Nest and Kong: Skull Island also contributed towards this $203 million with money spent on wages, goods and services.

“There were 3154 direct jobs created by productions supported through Screen Queensland investment.”

“My Government has invested $30 million funding over a four-year period (until 30 June 2019) to drive growth and attract large-scale film and high-end television productions.

“This commitment demonstrates our strong focus to build a successful screen sector, generating jobs and boosting the economy,” the Premier said.

Screen Queensland Chair Linda Apelt said the Annual Review highlighted Screen Queensland’s leadership role in delivering new initiatives and partnerships.

“The Queensland Originals program is a success in the digital space, with Screen Queensland partnering with ABC, SBS and Stan along with production and development support for short films from new directors,” Ms Apelt said.

Incubait is helping to develop writing talent and strong scripts that will appeal to fans and financiers, while the Gender Parity Program ensures appropriate female representation in key creative film roles.

“The Annual Review shows that Screen Queensland is enriching the cultural landscape across the state by providing more than $1 million towards 32 festivals and screen-culture related activities, including the Travelling Film Festival tour to Bundaberg, Toowoomba, Mackay, Cairns, Charters Towers and Townsville.

“This funding helps to engage regional communities where film festivals can make a big difference to local regions, attracting visitors, boosting the economy and supporting local jobs,” Ms Apelt said.
