Screen Queensland’s Games Residency is a year-long program for early-career game developers, focused on developing the skills and knowledge required to develop new games and games studios.

The first of its kind in Australia, the residency program is run in partnership with Workforce Australia Self-Employment Assistance provider Birdifi Bridge, with participants provided with co-working space, access to leading industry experts, business mentoring and income support.

About Shawn

Shawn is a professional filmmaker and animator who is transitioning into games development through Screen Queensland’s Games Residency program. He has also previously specialised in VFX.

Primary skillset: Art, VFX

Residency Goals

My goal is to become a tech-artist and refine my skills from filmmaker to games developer. I am aiming to showcase my game at PAX by the end of the year.

Residency Project

I am making my own spin on the tank genre by mixing the typical kart-racing and class hero shooter game called Spectankular. In the game, four players all chose a unique hero each with their own special abilities before being thrown into a battle royal. The player with the most kills in eight minutes is crowned as the winner.

Spectankular is a fusion of Mario Kart’s driving/drifting mechanics with Overwatch’s hero class system in a high-octane party shooter game for up to four players.
