La Boite’s barista will be serving hot beverages, courtesy of Merlo, so drop in for a chat and meet the Screen Queensland and La Boite artistic teams! > > > TUESDAY 26 MARCH La Boite is kicking HWY off in style, with a rolling conversation featuring a line-up of high-profile speakers from Brisbane and those dwelling across state lines, inviting a range of perspectives on why the arts matter. Facilitated by Louse Bezzina (Former Artistic Director, Bleach* Festival, incoming Artistic Director Brisbane Festival ), speakers include Clementine Ford (writer: ‘Boys will be Boys’ and ‘Fight Like A Girl’), Veronica Fury (Executive Producer, Wildbear Entertainment), Kerrin Benson (CEO, Multicultural Development Australia) and Betty Grumble. > > > FRIDAY 29 MARCH Stage and screen actress Christen O’Leary (Twelfth Night, Blackrock, Madea) will lead an exclusive masterclass for HWY participants, focused on empowering actors to move between stage to screen acting. With full knowledge that most actors do not have the luxury to work exclusively in one medium, Christen will deliver a masterclass that arms actors across skill levels with a toolkit for creating truthful, nuanced and imaginative performances, whatever the setting. > > > SUNDAY 31 MARCH “You’re terrible Muriel.” La Boîte is turning their Roundhouse Theatre into a cinema to mark the first weekend of the festival. Join in for an exclusive screening of P.J Hogan’s hilarious, frisky, and undeniably kitschy snapshot of Australian life, Muriel’s Wedding. Directed by P.J Hogan, Muriel’s Wedding features a wealth of great Australian actors, including Toni Collette, Bill Hunter and Rachel Griffiths. > > > MONDAY APRIL 1 Queensland-based screenwriter, director and producer, Darren Paul Fisher (Inbetweeners, Frequencies, Popcorn), leads participants through the complexities of pitching ideas to producers of all stripes. Informed by his extensive experience within the Australian screen sector, Darren’s workshop will highlight strategies for fashioning the perfect pitch, treatment, or one-liner to get your idea across the line. > > > TUESDAY APRIL 2 Writer, director and creator of the online comedy pilot, The Mother Load, funded by Screen Queensland, and the beautiful micro-documentary, My Body Says, funded by Screen Australia, Queensland-based Loani Arman will guide participants through the basics of content creation for the fastest growing format on the planet. In this dedicated workshop, Loani will focus on idea development within an episode format, content creation for specific audiences, advice on building creative teams and casting, and hints and tips for seeking out grants and funding opportunities. > > > FRIDAY APRIL 5 Curated by Screen Queensland – The First Ten Pages is a special event whereby audiences will hear the first ten pages of a new screenplay by local Queensland writers. Screen Queensland and La Boite is bringing an evening of works by local writers originally written for screen, directed by La Boite’s Artistic Director, Todd McDonald, and performed by a bevy of Brisbane actors. The catch – you will only hear the first ten pages of each screenplay! A testing ground for new ideas, tentative jokes, and meaty characters, The First Ten Pages gives writers for screen an opportunity to have their works heard, in a public forum, for the first time. As the night progresses, the audience will be invited to feed into a conversation about the future of each work, so come along and have your say.
