Five Workshop Places Available with Yona Harvey –   contributing writer to Marvel Comics’ series
Black Panther

Screen Queensland will support five Queensland screenwriters to attend an exclusive Queensland Poetry Festival workshop with Yona Harvey on finding a character’s unique voice through poetic devices.

WORKSHOP: Crafting Poetic Voice

August 25, 2018, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm, Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts, Fortitude Valley

In this very special workshop, Harvey shares her tricks and tips for lending nuance to characters by imagining their poetic voice.

‘Harvey creates a feeling of something put together as well as the best machines that sew and sing, every word a necessary part of the whole humming beauty.’ (The Pittsburgh City Paper).

Yona Harvey is an award-winning African American poet, literary artist and contributing writer to Marvel Comics’ best-selling Black Panther series, making her one of the first black women ever to have written for Marvel. She’s a recipient of a Kate Tufts Discovery Award (for her debut collection Hemming the Water) and a Barbara Deming Award for feminists in the arts. She lives in Pennsylvania, where she teaches poetry at the University of Pittsburgh and facilitates nonfiction workshops for adolescents writing about mental illness.

TO APPLY: Let us know in 25 words or less why you should attend the workshop by completing this short SmartyGrants form by 5pm, Wednesday 15th August 2018.  Successful applicants will be notified by email Friday 17th August 2018.
Proudly supported by Screen Queensland and the Queensland Government.
