sqhub and AFTRS present: Screenwriting Workshop for Emerging Practitioners

Screen Queensland and sqhub, in partnership with AFTRS, is offering a storytelling and screenwriting workshop for emerging screenwriters from Wednesday 5 to Friday 7 December 2018.

The three-day workshop will be hosted by writer and script producer Holly Lyons and held in the Screen Queensland boardroom and will cover the importance of story and character, and help you develop your narrative work. The course also covers scriptwriting essentials.

This workshop is ideal for emerging screenwriters, and people from creative backgrounds looking to write screen works.  The workshop is free, and requires a submission process. If you are interested, please send the following documents to the below email address:

> A recent copy of your CV
> A page sample of a script
> A page describing a screen project you are currently working on, including a synopsis, a writers statement detailing the form, structure, tone and techniques used to convey the themes/ideas and a personal statement as to why this project is important to you

Materials submitted will be reviewed by Screen Queensland and AFTRS confidentially.

We encourage applicants with specific reference to cultural background, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, geographic disadvantage and socio-economic status. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creatives are strongly encouraged to apply.

The outcome of your submissions will be emailed to you by 15 November 2018. Please note, feedback will not be provided on submissions.

Holly Lyons

About Holly Lyons

Holly Lyons is a writer and Script Producer with extensive experience in Australia and the UK. She has worked for Home and Away (Network Seven) in various roles, including Script Producer and Script editor. She is currently a freelance writer for the show. Other credits include: Neighbours (Fremantle), Skinner Boys (SLR Productions) Dani’s House (The Foundation), Bananas in Pyjamas (Southern Star), My Parents are Aliens (ITV),  Fireman Sam (HIT). Holly’s play ‘Space Virgins’ was a finalist in the ATYP Foundation Commission.

In the UK, Holly co-created the action comedy, Help! I’m a Teenage Outlaw. (ITV) Holly script edited Emmerdale, and later became staff writer. She worked on Crossroads (ITV) as Series Script Executive. She wrote the pilot script for the animated series, Hana’s Helpline (Five UK) and wrote the pilot for Horrid Henry, (Novel Entertainment) based on the books by Francesca Simon. Holly was selected to attend an EBU course, where her original series was awarded the prize of 15,000 euros and a development deal with the BBC. Holly also worked for Granada Kids in London.

Holly is committed to supporting emerging writers – she lectures screenwriting at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School and is the founder of the script assessment service, www.screenwritingscriptease.com. Holly volunteers on the Australian Writers’ Guild NSW Committee. In 2017 Holly conducted a biometric study into what key elements make a successful pitch, and since then she has delivered Pitching Workshops all over Australia. Recently Holly harnessed her flair for public speaking and became a marriage celebrant.
