Tide turns for Australia-first Netflix series this December

Queensland is set for global streaming success this December, with entertainment giant Netflix announcing an international release date for the home-grown, eight-part fictional drama series Tidelands.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said Tidelands, to premiere on December 14, was the first Netflix original drama series to be commissioned and made completely in Australia.

Tidelands was filmed entirely in south-east Queensland, including Stradbroke Island, and will showcase our stunning locations to audiences in more than 190 countries,” the Premier said.

“There’s already enormous interest in this series ahead of its release and I encourage its fans across the globe to come and experience the scenery which inspired this original drama.

“My Government is proud to have secured this Australia-first project thanks to the work of Screen Queensland and the Queensland Government’s Production Attraction Strategy.

“This series employed more than 500 Queenslanders across cast, crew and background extras and injected an estimated $12 million into the local economy.”

Screen Queensland CEO Tracey Vieira said securing Tidelands was a major win for the screen industry in Queensland, and securing the international SVOD commission was a key turning point for local production company Hoodlum.

Tidelands is yet another success for Emmy® and BAFTA Award-winning Hoodlum,” said Ms Vieira.

“We hope to continue to build on this momentum for Queensland in Los Angeles during Ausfilm Week where we will strengthen relationships with major international production companies and promote our new post, digital and visual effects attraction grant.”

Tidelands follows Cal McTeer (Charlotte Best – Home & Away, Puberty Blues), a young woman who after 10 years in juvenile detention returns home to the small fishing village of Orphelin Bay, where she’s plunged into a mystery and must uncover the town’s well-hidden secrets.

Elsa Pataky (Fast and the Furious), Madeleine Madden (Around The Block) and Peter O’Brien (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) co-star in the original series written by Stephen M. Irwin (Harrow).
