S-Town creator Brian Reed in Conversation in Brisbane – 27 July

Screen Queensland, in partnership with the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) will present Brian Reed in a ticketed talk for Queensland’s screen industry and hosted by ABC Radio Brisbane presenter Rebecca Levingston, announced Screen Queensland CEO Tracey Vieira.

“We are extremely excited to have enticed Brian Reed to Brisbane for a special industry event in Brisbane on 27 July at QAGOMA’s Australian Cinémathèque following his sold-out public talks in Sydney and Melbourne,” Ms Vieira said.

Brian Reed is the host and co-creator of the ground-breaking podcast series S-Town, a production by Serial and This American Life. The chart-topping S-Town was downloaded a record-breaking 16 million times in the first week of its 2017 release.

Brian Reed spent more than three years reporting and writing for S-Town, which began when listener John B. McLemore asked Reed to investigate an alleged murder in his small Alabama town. The series has won widespread popular and critical acclaim.

“Rebecca Levingston’s role will be as the event facilitator and her skills as a journalist and audio storyteller will help make the discussion more meaningful for participants,” Ms Vieira said.

Tickets will also be available for a livestream of the event, to be held at QAGOMA’s Australian Cinémathèque in an adjacent theatre.

“We know there will be enormous interest for Brian Reed In Conversation, and live streaming will allow another 100 people to experience the event,” Ms Vieira said.

Brian Reed In Conversation will be followed by an all-day workshop led by Brian Reed on 28 July for selected Queensland-based screenwriters to develop original drama/factual podcast series.

“This exclusive workshop is the only one of its kind in the country and is a direct response to our industry’s request to expand skills in writing for new platforms,” Ms Vieira said.

AFTRS CEO Neil Peplow said:  “AFTRS is delighted to be partnering with Screen Queensland for this initiative. Podcasting has taken the world by storm, with Australians amongst the most avid adopters and there is an emerging  opportunity for screenwriters to reach a new audience.”

Workshop applications close on 7 July 2017.
