The annual international Euroscript competition for emerging screenwriters has announced its 2016 competition winners. The first prize winner for the best unproduced screenplay for 2016 is a romantic comedy “Elvis Town” written by emerging Brisbane screenwriter Paul Mahoney.

The Euroscript Screenwriting Competition was launched in 1994 under the auspices of the European Union’s Media II programme. Since its launch thousands of screenplays have been submitted.  The competition, while based  in London, is not exclusively European and is open to writers globally, the requirement being that they be feature length screenplays intended for Cinema.

The purpose of the competition is to discover new talent and to facilitate the development process of their best ideas ensuring that good screenplays are made better by expert guidance and the practice of a great deal of polishing and re-writing through many drafts, in the way Hollywood screenplays are developed.

Paul Mahoney is a self-taught writer, following a career in business he has taken up his life-long ambition to be a writer for the cinema. “Elvis Town” is one of a number of screenplays he has written.

“Elvis Town” is a “feel good movie” set in the Australian rural town of Parkes  and is about their annual Elvis Festival where Elvis Presley impersonators abound. It is a romantic comedy about a Network news journalist and his TV crew who are sent to Parkes to cover the events and personalities of the festival. As an ambitious network news reporter Ted dreams of better more important main stream reporting, but romantic and hilarious events change his life forever.
