Screen Queensland, in partnership with Screenworks, is bringing director and producer Mandy Lake back to Far North Queensland.
In this fun, highly interactive one-day workshop, Mandy will guide filmmakers into the glorious art of pitching, where they will learn how to sell their stories, projects and themselves.
Mandy will cover everything from personal and professional branding, marketing principles, finding hooks and emotional “button-pushers,” developing written pitch materials and teasers, mastering the physical pitch, to creating connections and networking tactics. Mandy will also delve into the intricacies of finding potential funding sources, marketplaces and industry contacts to pitch to.
The day will be rounded off with the chance to put your new skills into practice during a speed-dating pitching session, followed by optional networking drinks.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their pre-existing pitch materials into the workshop for feedback.
This is a terrific opportunity to prepare for Screen Queensland’s In The Frame event in April, Screen Forever in May, and Screenworks’ Regional to Global in June, so be sure to register now. You’ll be all the pitcher for it (apologies for the pun)!
As part of the registration process, you will also have the opportunity to apply for a 15-minute one-on-one session with Mandy for four selected participants to refine their pitch in the weeks following the workshop.
Get Your Pitch On workshop is delivered as part of our North Queensland Regional Program.
WHO CAN REGISTER?
To register for this workshop, applicants must be:
- over 18 years of age
- an Australian citizen or resident living in Far North or North Queensland for a minimum of the past 6 months.

ABOUT MANDY LAKE
Having spent more than 25 years on both sides of the story pitching table—as a photojournalist; media, marketing and PR operative; artistic director; producer; director; top chook at film production house, Flickchicks; and more recently as a principal at Five Storey Films—Mandy has gained an appreciable insight into the art of selling stories and yourself.
So much so, she’s a big subscriber to the notion that, “life’s a pitch and then you die,” and has given strict instructions for this to be inscribed on her tombstone.
When she’s not in pitching mode spruiking her goods and wares, Mandy’s directing and producing them for the likes of SBS (Bowled Over), Animal Planet (Snake Boss), and ABC (The 100+ Club, The 110+ Club). She’s also currently in full flight developing, amongst many other things, the factual entertainment format Return to Me with Ancestry.com, and the brand-funded comedic YouTube series Garden of Eden.
Mandy’s production company Five Story Films is also a recent recipient of Screen Queensland’s Business Enterprise initiative.
