Screen Queensland is expanding its signature screen practitioners forum to Far North Queensland in 2025, applying a local lens to screen production and exploring new opportunities for Queensland’s screen creatives to shine on a local and global stage. In the Frame Far North Queensland is a one-day event including panels, lunch and networking opportunities for local industry practitioners.

Hear from industry experts and exciting new talents who will discuss local stories on the world stage, looking to the horizon of what’s possible in an inspiring, enlightening and approachable range of panels and sessions.

MARKET AND TRAVEL GRANTS

Screen Queensland is offering Market and Travel Grants of up to $1500 towards travel and accommodation to support regional attendees. Applications close Tuesday 25 March.

Please note this opportunity is open to residents form regional Queensland outside of Greater Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast City councils. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander practitioners, people living with disability and members of other under-represented groups are encouraged to apply.

ABOUT THE PANELLISTS

As Commissioning Editor at Stan Originals, Alicia Brown works across the scripted and factual slate of film and television projects. Previously Alicia was Head of Content Investment at VicScreen where she managed the Victorian Production Fund and conceived and delivered the Originate Features program. As a feature producer and executive producer her work has premiered at Sundance, Berlinale, MIFF and Edinburgh. Alicia began her career as a journalist, producer and presenter on documentary and music programs for Radio National and triple j in Australia and the BBC in London. 

Cieron Cody is a development and production executive with experience in agency and broadcast settings. With a focus on project and slate management, Cieron has overseen the development, finance, production and completion of over 100 titles across animation, children’s content, games, VR, shorts, feature films and limited and return series in documentary, fiction and factual entertainment. Cieron has supported a range of award-winning and record-breaking productions with some of Australia’s and the world’s most recognised market players and talent.  As a member of SBS’s Unscripted commissioning team, Emily oversees SBS’s diverse commissioned entertainment and food slate, bringing shows such as Shaun Micallef’s Origin Odessey, The Cook Up and Mastermind to Australian screens. Emily heads up Australia’s production involvement with the international song contest Eurovision as well as being the Australian Head of Delegation.

With 30 years of television experience, Emily Griggs has produced shows for all free to air networks across most genres, from entertainment, comedy, factual and reality, to food, lifestyle and children’s programming. Her credits include a variety titles and formats, including The Chefs’ Line, The Secret Life Of 4 Year Olds, I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, Dancing with the Stars, Married At First Sight, and much more.

Lana Greenhalgh began working with Foxtel in 2015 after leaving a career in the talent management industry to pursue her passion for television drama. She began as Scripted Production Coordinator working across Foxtel’s scripted production and development slate including Wentworth, A Place to Call Home, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Australia Day, Secret City: Under the Eagle, Lambs of God, The End and Upright. Lana was promoted to Head of Scripted Originals for the Foxtel Group in 2023 where she works on the procurement, development, and production of all Foxtel Group scripted commissions. She most recently oversaw production as Executive Producer on the first BINGE Original series, Love Me Season 1 and 2, and Season 2 of the critically acclaimed Foxtel Series Upright, as well as working across critically-acclaimed Foxtel Group Originals, Strife Season 1 and 2, The Twelve Season 1 and 2, Colin From Accounts Season 1 and 2, The Last Anniversary and Mix Tape.  

Stephen Oliver is a commissioning editor with the ABC, with a passion for people and impactful stories. Previously an award-winning filmmaker, he has overseen some of the national broadcaster’s biggest hits including Love on the Spectrum, War on Waste, Ningaloo Nyinggulu, Better Date Than Never, Australia’s Wild Odyssey and Revelation. He is always open to discussing new ideas and ways to create content that makes the world a better place.

ABOUT THE PANELLISTS

Georgia Mappin is the Managing Director of Aunty Donna, Haven’t You Done Well Productions (HYDW), and Grouse House, shaping the future of Australian comedy by bridging the divide between online and traditional entertainment. Under her leadership, Grouse House has grown into a thriving platform for alternative comedy, amassing over 3 million views across web series and podcasts. In 2023, she spearheaded the production of Aunty Donna’s Coffee Cafe (ABC) and a slate of original projects, while also leading global campaigns for brands like LEGO and PlayStation. With HYDW set to shoot its first feature film in 2025 and Grouse House expanding rapidly, Georgia is driving an ambitious new chapter for the company. Aunty Donna’s world tour, DREM, is also taking their signature chaos to a global stage. With 14 years in comedy and screen production and currently completing a Master of Screen Business at AFTRS, she’s committed to amplifying emerging voices, pushing creative boundaries, and redefining how comedy reaches audiences everywhere. 

Lee Stewart is a creative writer with over 11 years of experience in short-form video. He currently manages brand partnerships for a select group of global creators and is helping Changer Studios roll out its upskilling programs across APAC and North America. Lee works closely with diverse brands to forge strategic collaborations that align with their goals and the creators’ unique styles, ensuring mutually beneficial campaigns. 

Max Miller is a comedy director most known for his work in Aunty Donna. In 2020 the group saw the release of their first TV series, the AACTA nominated and ADG winning Aunty Donna’s Big ol’ House of Fun, made for Netflix originals in the US. This was followed up by the release of their ABC series and ADG winning, Aunty Donna’s Coffee Cafe. The group also has a large YouTube channel with over 150 million views and 610,000+ sub-scribers (with Max directing all content) which includes the AACTA nominated series Glennridge Secondary College.

Max has also directed all six episodes of the ABC series ‘Australian Epic’ made with the Chaser’s Chris Taylor and Andrew Hansen as well as the newly released ABC series ‘Optics’ of which he directed all episodes.

With shifts in the way industry does business in recent years, the pathways to establishing a career as a writer, director or producer may seem increasingly complex to navigate. While it isn’t easy to get that first major break, exciting new voices continue to emerge. This panel features writers, directors, and producers who have made their mark in Queensland and beyond. They will discuss how they got there and offer their advice to the next wave of creatives. 

ABOUT THE PANELLISTS

Deb Spinocchia is the Head of Unscripted at BBC Studios Productions Australia, re-imagining British formats and firing up original productions for local broadcasters and international streamers.  Deb oversees the factual and entertainment slate including Top Gear Australia, Dancing With the Stars, The 1% Club, Mastermind,  award-winning The Great Australian Bake Off and The Matchmakers as well as being an Executive Producer on  Ray Martin: The Last Goodbye. Deb joined from Screentime Australia where she was Executive Producer of SAS Australia and the AACTA nominated The School That Tried to End Racism. Prior to this, Deb was an Executive Producer at Seven Studios where she oversaw productions including House Rules, Zumbo’s Just Desserts, First Dates and Back with the Ex. She has also worked as a producer for many leading companies including Southern Star Entertainment, Endemol Shine, Fremantle Media, SBS and ABC.

Kick Gurry is an Australian actor known for his work in film and television, with a career spanning over two decades. He gained international recognition for his role in Speed Racer, directed by the Wachowskis, and has also starred in acclaimed films like Looking for Alibrandi, and Edge of Tomorrow. Beyond acting, Gurry has emerged as a prominent writer and director, most notably creating, and starring in the satirical war drama series C*A*U*G*H*T*. His ability to blend comedy and drama has cemented his reputation as a versatile and innovative talent in the entertainment industry. 

Mitch Stanley is a Wiradjuri producer who started his producing career with ABC3 Kid’s show, Move It Mob Style, then four series of Colour Theory with Richard Bell and Tony Albert. He wrote and produced Servant or Slave, produced Warwick Thornton’s documentary television series, The Beach, and produced the first Indigenous official co production between Australia and New Zealand, We Are Still Here, which opened the Sydney Film Festival, was selected for the Toronto International Film Festival and went on to win the Best Narrative Feature film at ImagineNative Film Festival. Mitch recently produced societal thriller and psychological horror, The Moogai with Director Jon Bell and Causeway Films (The Babadook, Talk To Me) and was officially selected for competition in the Midnight Section of the prestigious Sundance Film Festival for 2024, and won the audience award for Best Australian Feature at the Sydney Film Festival in 2024, and CinefestOz’s Best Australian Feature Film with a $100k cash prize. 

Stephen M. Irwin is a showrunner, producer, screenwriter and novelist. His critically acclaimed supernatural novels The Broken Ones and The Dead Path have been published around the world. He was co-creator, co-executive producer and head writer of the forensic crime drama series Harrow starring Ioan Gruffudd. Stephen also wrote the original crime drama Secrets & Lies (remade in U.S. by ABC Network and starred Juliette Lewis and Ryan Phillipe), the award- winning miniseries Wake in Fright, the feature film Australia Day, and co-created the Netflix drama series Tidelands. Stephen is now one of the founding principals of Moving Floor Entertainment, a Brisbane- based, showrunner-focused production company.

Black Snow burst onto Australian screens in 2023 to a huge response. Now, with two seasons under their belts, will there be a third? Meet some of the key creatives behind the smash hit to talk through the process, importance and ups and downs of filming regionally. 

ABOUT THE PANELLISTS

Ben Grant is a partner of the highly successful Australia film and television production company Goalpost Pictures known for the Black Snow franchise starring Travis Fimmel and box office hit films The Sapphires and The Invisible Man. Ben’s experience spans the film and television industry, firstly as a production account and financial controller and then with Goalpost Pictures as an executive producer specialising in finance, legal and production control. His film credits as executive producer include The Sapphires, Holding The Man, Felony, Upgrade, The Invisible Man, I Am Woman and Carmen. His television credits include and Lockie Leonard, Cleverman, Fighting Season, New Gold Mountain, Black Snow and Top End Bub. Ben is currently a member of the Film Certification Advisory Board that provides advice to the Federal Minister for the Arts on applications to the Location and Post Digital and Visual Effects (PDV) Offsets under Division 376 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997. Ben has held leadership positions with film and television industry bodies Screen Producers Australia, where he served as vice-president and the Australian Directors Guild, where he served as treasurer. Ben was elected to the board of Screenrights, a non-profit organisation that provides rights and royalty management services to the screen industry and facilitates access to screen content for licensees. Ben is a current member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. 

Lucas Taylor is a multiple AWGIE and SPA award-winning writer and director. He is the Creator, Executive Producer and Head Writer of the critically acclaimed Black Snow. The drama series aired on Stan and Sundance Now, selling to multiple territories and securing seven AACTA Award Nominations including Best Screenplay and Best Drama. The highly-anticipated second season of Black Snow recently premiered on Stan in January 2025. Lucas is also the Creator, Executive Producer and Head Writer of In Limbo, a six part comedy drama for the ABC, which premiered in 2023. His previous television credits include Harrow (ABC), Vikings: Athelstan’s Journal (History), Secrets & Lies (Ten), Texas Rising: The Lost Soldier (History) and The Strange Calls (ABC). In 2019 Lucas was the winner of the John Hinde Award for excellence in Science Fiction writing for his virtual reality feature film Eleven Eleven. Created for NBCUniversal Studios, Eleven Eleven premiered at the SXSW Film Festival and was part of the official program at the Venice International Film Festival. In 2017 Lucas’s virtual reality documentary Inside Manus (SBS) won the SPA Award for best interactive production. The film premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival and was part of the Cannes Film Festival’s Innovation showcase. From 2012-16 Lucas was Creative Director at Emmy and BAFTA award winning production company Hoodlum. His work at Hoodlum included multiplatform campaigns for major film and television properties including SALT (Sony), The Bourne Legacy (Universal), Divergent (eOne) and Dance Academy (Werner Films/ABC TV). Lucas was also a key part of Hoodlum’s in-house development team, which generated film and television hits including; Five Bedrooms (Ten), Harrow (ABC), Australia Day (Foxtel), Secrets & Lies (Ten), SLiDE (Foxtel) and The Strange Calls (ABC). 

It was a teenage interest in stills photography and video cameras that led Murray Lui to what is now a full-time passion and profession. An Indigenous Australian from an area known as the Torres Strait in Far Northern Australia. He was born on Thursday Island and raised on the outer island community called Poruma, which is part of the Kulkulgal nation. A Masters Cinematography graduate of the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS), Murray is a cinematographer working across features, television series drama and documentary. He enjoys projects that interest and fuel his passion for the creative collaborative storytelling processes. 

Talijah Blackman-Corowa is young talent forging a career in film and television. Her breakout role was in Goalpost Pictures’ Black Snow, appearing as ‘Isabel Baker’ in the series produced for Stan and Sundance Central. Talijah can currently be seen in the ABC television series Plum as Ainsley. Coming up next will be the second series of Deadloch, as well as the short film See Saw and webseries The Death of Bunny Munro. Talijah is also building her experience behind the scenes, having recently worked as a Directors Attachment on Black Snow Season 2.
