Music is an integral part of the screen experience, yet it can often be a daunting and difficult area for screen practitioners in terms of sourcing music and composers, getting the right creative fit, and ensuring the correct clearances are in place. Needing to get it done on time and in budget can add further challenges. This session is designed to introduce key music copyright concepts, demystify the permissions and paperwork process, identify key and dependable sources of music, cut through the myths and misnomers that surround music use, and provide participants with a clear understanding of how to approach music needs for productions large and small. The session will also cover how to choose, brief and work with a composer with insights from internationally acclaimed local composer Ack Kinmonth.

Tyler McLoughlan has worked in music rights management since 2005, and founded Brisbane agency The Sound Pound in 2011 to provide music solutions for advertising, film, TV, gaming, corporate and branded promotions. Tyler negotiates rights with record labels and publishers in Australia and internationally, and sources composers, producers and musicians where music is required to be created specifically for the needs of a production. She is particularly passionate about finding extraordinary independent music, and counts music licensing and supervision credits across clients/productions including Suncorp, Good Start, KFC, Samoa Tourism, Billabong, Specsavers, Wentworth, Mustangs FC, The Time Our Lives, House Husbands, Two Weeks, Crawl, and Nice Package. Tyler has also lectured in music copyright at JMC Academy since 2010, and regularly lectures and runs workshops for the likes of SAE, Griffith University, QUT, Southbank TAFE and Q Music.

Ack Kinmonth is a multi-instrumental composer from Brisbane who works across film, television, advertising, gaming and corporate productions. Ack’s advertising portfolio includes campaigns for Coca-Cola, Toyota, Hewlett-Packard, Subway, Huawei, RACQ and Michael Hill. Amongst television composition credits for Balloon Barnyard (Disney), Texas Rising: The Lost Soldier (History) and Vikings: Athelstan’s Journal (History), Ack was the first Australian composer to create a featured song on Sesame Street (Five Kangaroos featuring Jessica Mauboy, followed by 1-10 Hoedown). He has also had over 50 million hits for the 35-episode animated web series Shopkins which is now streamed on Netflix.
