Screen Queensland today announced that filming has wrapped in Brisbane on Bull (working title), a new Australian feature drama directed by award-winning filmmaker Jeffrey Walker (FING!, Allen, Who the Hell is Hamish?).

Supported through Screen Queensland’s Screen Finance Fund, the film brings together an acclaimed creative team and stellar cast to tell a distinctive Australian story, while showcasing Queensland’s screen industry talent and production capabilities.

Starring Queensland actor, writer and producer George Pullar (Posthumous, Deadloch, Evil Dead Burn) alongside Richard Roxburgh, Robyn Malcolm, Teresa Palmer, Thomas M Wright and Harrison Gilbertson, Bull (working title) is inspired by the true story of a fast-talking inmate who joins the prison debating team in a desperate bid to turn his life around and, for once, make his mother proud. Armed with nothing but words, courage and the belief that people can change, he takes on the very system that shaped him.

Minister for the Arts John-Paul Langbroek said the production is the latest Australian drama to be made in the sunshine state following Fortitude Valley, Dustfall, Two Years Later and Black Snow.

“Bull (working title) is expected to inject approximately $4.5 million into the Queensland economy while employing 160 local cast and crew and creating valuable opportunities for local businesses.”

Screen Queensland CEO Jacqui Feeney said Screen Queensland’s commitment to supporting compelling Australian stories and investing in local talent made Brisbane an ideal base for this feature film.

“Jeffrey Walker is one of Queensland’s leading directors, and the production will draw on the strength of our state’s highly skilled crew base and showcase their ingenuity in crafting distinctive local stories for international audiences.

“Screen Queensland is proud to support this accomplished creative team. It is also fantastic to see Jeffrey directing back-to-back productions in Queensland with global appeal.”

Screen Australia Chief Operating Officer Grainne Brunsdon said Bull (working title) is a deeply human story.

“It explores a broad spectrum of Australian experiences of incarceration, shining a light on themes of trauma, masculinity and rehabilitation.

“Led by acclaimed director Jeffrey Walker and an award-winning producing team, the film promises to bring a distinctly Australian perspective to these experiences in a way that will resonate with audiences at home and abroad.”

Producer Michael Lawrence said Screen Queensland has been a fantastic partner.

“We are so appreciative to have been able to film a distinctly Australian story here in Brisbane with the support of a world-class cast, crew and local partners who welcomed us from day one.

“We’re deeply grateful for Screen Queensland’s investment in this bold, original Australian story about courage, family and the belief that people can change to audiences here and around the world.”
