In 2022, Screen Queensland will commence a long-term program of climate and sustainability action, starting with the development of an organisational Environmental Sustainability Roadmap.

Leading environmental consultants Edge Environment have been engaged to work with Screen Queensland to research, write and launch a comprehensive strategy, informed by industry consultation and the creation of an emissions footprint of Screen Queensland and an “archetype” production.

The strategy will outline key policy recommendations for Screen Queensland operations (including Screen Queensland Studios), funding programs and incentives, as well as provide actionable and viable recommendations for the local and Australian screen industry on reducing carbon emissions and other environmental impacts.

Screen Queensland CEO Kylie Munnich said the screen agency is drawing on best practice internationally and local experience and knowledge, as a key goal of the ground-breaking strategy is to lead the national industry to transition to more sustainable business and production practices.

“Climate change is an enormous and urgent issue affecting us all, and becoming more and more prevalent in global screen industry discourse and operations,” said Ms Munnich.

“Numerous global studios and streaming platforms have already rolled out green policies and goals. Screen Queensland is driven to join the movement, for a sustainable future for our planet and our screen industry – this is critical for the viability of local and international production in Queensland.

“The Australian screen industry needs bold, decisive action and leadership from agencies to help guide and support us towards a more sustainable future. We are taking this first step to lead a conversation, with the expert help of Edge Environment.”

Ms Munnich emphasised that the long-term plan is to roll out free training and practical advice for the local screen industry.

“We want to challenge ourselves and provide the industry with a true climate action plan, with an emphasis on action, by way of providing research-based tools and know-how,” she said.

Established in 2008, Edge Environment is a full-service sustainability consultancy focused on Asia-Pacific and America, with teams based in Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Chile.

Clients have included the Australian Government, City of Sydney, Australia Post, Boral, Bluescope, Sanofi, Fujitsu, Dulux and many more across numerous industries.
