Screen Queensland has announced that filming begins in April on Amazon MGM Studio’s Honeymoon with Harry starring Kevin Costner and Jake Gyllenhaal, the latest in a steady slate of Queensland-made projects for the studio.
Shooting in Brisbane and The Whitsundays, the feature is directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, and is based on the novel by Bart Baker, with Sarah Pidgeon also in talks to join the cast in Queensland.
Honeymoon with Harry follows a rough-around-the-edges man (Gyllenhaal) who ends up sharing an unwanted journey with his fiancée’s prickly, overprotective father (Costner) after a life-altering turn upends their plans. Against the backdrop of an island honeymoon, the two men clash and bicker before gradually uncovering an unexpected bond in this emotional dramedy.
Minister for the Arts, John-Paul Langbroek said that the Crisafulli Government continues to deliver employment and economic benefits to Queensland through Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy.
“By backing our local screen production sector, we are creating long-term careers for our crews and supporting small businesses across a host of industries including construction, catering, transport and accommodation,” Minister Langbroek said.
“During production, Honeymoon with Harry will contribute an estimated $51 million to the state’s economy and employ 215 people, as well as showcasing our state as a tourism destination to audiences around the world.”
Screen Queensland CEO Jacqui Feeney said that Honeymoon with Harry is the latest high-profile production from Amazon MGM Studios to be made in Australia’s sunshine state.
“We are delighted to be a trusted partner for Amazon MGM, with our local screen industry providing the high-quality expertise that they can rely on, while our competitive incentives enable them to capitalise on our captivating locations and first-class infrastructure.”
Producer Mike Karz said, “We are thrilled to bring Honeymoon with Harry to Queensland. The state’s diverse locations and incredible natural beauty offer an ideal backdrop for our film, and we’re having a great time collaborating with talented local creatives and crew to bring this story to life.”
Directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra added, “Queensland has everything we could hope for. We’re doing Chicago, the Caribbean and everything in between—all within a day’s reach. The crew are great and the weather’s even better.”
Recent Amazon MGM Studios productions made in Queensland include Balls Up, The Bluff, Subversion, Voltron and the Untitled Mike Thornton Project.
Honeymoon with Harry is scripted by Dan Fogelman (Paradise, Crazy, Stupid, Love, This Is Us), who also serves as a producer. Directed by Glenn Ficarra (Paradise, Crazy, Stupid, Love, This Is Us) and John Requa (Paradise, Crazy, Stupid, Love, This Is Us). Producers include Mike Karz (Valentine’s Day, Blended, Upgraded) for Gulfstream Pictures and Jennifer Salke under Sullivan Street Productions.
Honeymoon with Harry is supported by the Australian Government through the Location Offset and the Queensland Government through Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy.
