The stars and Brisbane city align for the world premiere of Netflix’s first Australian original series Tidelands and series two of Harrow in production

Elsa Pataky (Fast and the Furious), Charlotte Best (Home & Away, Puberty Blues), Madeleine Madden (Dora the Explorer, Picnic at Hanging Rock), Aaron Jakubenko (Spartacus: War of the Damned), Marco Pigossi (Edge of Desire) and Mattias Inwood (The Shannara Chronicles) will be walking the red carpet in Brisbane on Sunday 9 December for the world premiere of the Netflix supernatural crime drama series, Tidelands.

Tidelands is the first Netflix original drama series to have been commissioned and made in Australia by Queensland-based production company, Hoodlum Entertainment, and will premiere on Netflix on 14 December 2018.

Tidelands was supported by the Queensland Government’s Production Attraction Strategy through Screen Queensland and was filmed entirely in South East Queensland.

“This is another big win for Brisbane to be standing in the international spotlight and hosting the world premiere of Tidelands for Netflix, and we are looking forward to welcoming back the marquee cast to our capital,” said the Screen Queensland CEO Tracey Vieira.

“The first trailer for Tidelands was released this week and gives the world a glimpse of our spectacular locations with the beautiful sights of North Stradbroke Island, Cleveland, Victoria Point, Redland Bay, Raby Bay, Mount Cotton, Ransome, Shorncliffe and Steiglitz taking a lead role and which will be showcased in over 190 countries.

“We congratulate Tracey Robertson and Nathan Mayfield and their Emmy® and BAFTA Award-winning company Hoodlum, including head writer and co-creator Stephen M Irwin, for their stellar work in producing this international series,” said Ms Vieira.

Tidelands is an eight-part Netflix series that employed more than 500 Queenslanders across cast, crew and background extras and injected an estimated $12,429,848 into the local economy. Post-production also took place in Queensland.

“To secure this international Netflix commission, Hoodlum has proven it is a global production-house heavyweight with the talent and expertise to produce an international series as well as any of the major studios.

“A big turning point for Hoodlum came when they were the first production company in Queensland to secure a prestigious first-look deal with ABC Studios International and produced the crime drama series Harrow,” said Ms Vieira.

Series two of Harrow commenced filming in Brisbane this week and is also supported by the Queensland Government via Screen Queensland.

The series is expected to spend $15,985,940 on Queensland jobs, goods and services and employ more than 220 crew, 75 cast and around 800 extras across production, post-production and visual effects.

Ms Vieira said: “We are delighted to once again support Hoodlum and partner with ABC Studios International and broadcaster ABC Australia who announced series two in their upfronts this week following the success of the show’s critically-lauded season one.”

Ioan Gruffudd is returning to the titular role and will be joined by new cast member, Jolene Anderson as well as audience favourites from Season One, Robyn Malcolm, Remy Hii, Darren Gilshenan, Hunter Page Lochard, Ella Newton, Damien Garvey and Anna Lise Phillips.

About Tidelands

Tidelands follows Cal McTeer, played by Charlotte Best (Home & Away, Puberty Blues), a young woman who returns home to the small fishing village of Orphelin Bay after ten years in juvenile detention then jail.  However, Orphelin Bay is shrouded in mysteries. When the body of a local fisherman washes ashore, the town’s clandestine relationship with drug smuggling is suddenly on public display.  Cal must uncover the town’s well-hidden secrets, while investigating a commune of outcasts who live in a hidden pocket of the bay – a group of sexy and dangerous half-Siren / half-human “Tidelanders”. Elsa Pataky (Fast and the Furious) stars as the mysterious and alluring Adrielle Cuthbert, the leader of the Tidelanders who will go to any length to protect her tribe of people.

Tidelands also stars Australian actors Aaron Jakubenko (Spartacus: War of the Damned) as Cal’s misguided and secretive brother Augie, and Peter O’Brien (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) as Augie’s faithful deckhand. Brazilian actor Marco Pigossi (Caras e Bocas) features as Dylan. New Zealand actor Mattias Inwood (Will) is the Senior Constable who also has a secret to uncover with Cal. Australian actors Madeleine Madden (Mystery Road), Caroline Brazier (Rake) and Dalip Sondhi (Secret City) also star in the show.
