Meet the Broadcasters: ABC Scripted

Screen Queensland presents Meet the Broadcasters with representatives from ABC joining us in Brisbane on Thursday 12 September.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation are the largest commissioner of scripted content in Australia, producing compelling, distinctly Australian stories that deliver to a broad audience. Members of the ABC Scripted team will be visiting Brisbane to meet the talented practitioners that call Queensland home and share insights into what they are looking to add to their slates. A networking session will follow the conversation.

ABOUT THE TEAM
Rachel Okine

As Head of Scripted at the ABC, Rachel Okine oversees the Australian national broadcaster’s scripted Drama and Comedy slates. After starting her career over 20 years ago in acquisitions at FilmFour, Rachel Okine was the first employee of Hopscotch, later becoming the Acquisitions Executive for eOne ANZ and Head of Development for Hopscotch Features. Rachel moved back to Europe in 2015 to become Paris-based VP of International Production and Acquisitions for Studiocanal and was subsequently appointed VP of International Acquisitions for STX. Returning to Australia in 2020, Rachel was appointed Managing Director of Academy Award-nominated production company Aquarius Films to strategically lead its film and TV operations. Rachel joined Australian streaming service Stan in 2021 as Senior Commissioning Editor, overseeing a slate of scripted drama and comedy, feature films and feature documentaries.  

Brett Sleigh

One of Australia’s most experienced scripted television executives, Brett began his career in the script department of Blue Heelers and writing and performing in numerous comedy festivals, including the Edinburgh Fringe.  Prior to joining the ABC, Brett was at SBS Television, working across their slate of feature film, drama, animation and comedy titles.  During his time at the ABC, Brett has overseen the development and production of over 35 drama and comedy titles including The Slap, The Strange Calls, Jack Irish, Please Like Me, Harrow, Utopia and Rosehaven.  Recent titles include the multi award-winning comedy Fisk, acclaimed drama The Newsreader and the highly anticipated new series, Return to Paradise.
