Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the screen world’s love for Queensland continues, with a major new international thriller set to commence filming in November.

“Columbia Pictures’ The Shallows will be the latest film to shoot in Queensland, with production at Village Roadshow Studios,” the Premier said.

“The film will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, written by Anthony Jaswinski, and produced by Lynn Harris and Matti Leshem.

“After I met with the major studios in the US, I also met with the producers of this film here in Brisbane when they were considering which part of the world they would shoot their film.

“I’m very pleased they’ve chosen Queensland, where they will have the opportunity to make the most of our world -lass facilities including the purpose built water tank (the largest in Australia), and our world-class crews and cast.

“The Shallows will showcase Queensland’s stunning beaches and employ around 130 crew.

“My Government remains in negotiations with US studios to secure additional feature films which will bring significant new money into the state, creating new jobs and economic opportunities for Queensland.

“Yesterday’s announcement to partner with Village Roadshow to build Australia’s biggest sound stage will only add to the attractiveness of Queensland as a major film production destination.

“We are seeing real growth in Queensland’s film industry with production expenditure of $113 million in 2014-15 from four international productions.

“We are set for another big year in 2015-16 with The Nest 3D due to start filming in October at Village Roadshow Studios and on location in South East Queensland,” she said.

Screen Queensland chief executive officer Tracey Vieira said The Shallows would keep studios and industry working at capacity, generating jobs and boosting the economy.

“Queensland has long been known for its filmmaking capabilities but now the state is really being showcased on the screen globally through international productions filming here,” Ms Vieira said.

“This will ensure that the legacy of The Shallows lives long beyond the physical production and attracts more international production to our shores.”
