Screen Queensland appoints Derek Hall – Manager

Screen Queensland welcomes Derek Hall as Manager of Studio Operations at its new production studios located at Hemmant, Brisbane.

The Queensland Government invested $12 million into the new, fit-for-purpose Screen Queensland Studios which were officially opened by the Premier of Queensland, Annastacia Palaszczuk on Thursday 31 January 2019.

Derek brings extensive experience to Queensland having led Honua Studios, the largest independent film studio in Hawaii, from 2014 to 2018, and working with production companies such as Universal, Disney, ABC, IMAX, NBC and Netflix.

During this time Derek also managed several companies working out of Honua Studios, including the Global Virtual Studio (GVS) Accelerator, named one of the 50 most innovative accelerators in the U.S., helping Hawaiian creative entrepreneurs develop and produce content for a variety of platforms from graphic novels to major feature films.

Derek has worked with renowned international filmmaker David L. Cunningham at the Honua Studios for the last four years where he strengthened his screen industry expertise and credits, most recently working as an Associate Producer on feature film Running for Grace starring Matt Dillon and Jim Caviezel and directed by David L. Cunningham.

Screen Queensland CEO Tracey Vieira said: “Screen Queensland is thrilled to have Derek Hall join Screen Queensland Studios.

“Derek brings a wealth of experience having developed the Studio complex in Hawaii from a place with a converted warehouse to the largest independent facility in the State,” said Ms Vieira.

“Derek has come home to Australia with a vision for Screen Queensland Studios and how it can continue to develop and grow to ensure Queensland filmmakers will have the perfect facility to make content for the world.”

Derek Hall said he is delighted to return to Australia and lead the development of the new Screen Queensland Studios.

“It’s great to be coming home with my family and be able to play a part in the continued growth of the Queensland screen industry, something I’ve been watching with excitement from the US,” said Mr Hall.

Derek will lead operations at the new Screen Queensland Studios and work with local, national and international production companies to ensure high-quality content is created in Queensland and a sustainable screen industry is maintained creating jobs and delivering economic returns for all Queenslanders.
