VR and gaming are big business globally and particularly across the Asia Pacific region. Learn more about what’s happening in VR and gaming worldwide and especially here in Queensland, with two special panel events on Saturday 3 December as part of BAPFF.
Join us for an insightful conversation with Queensland’s leading innovators in the area of games and VR as they explore the nature of games, the characters who inhabit them, and how we ensure story is still king in this ever-evolving field.
The Gaming Panel includes:
> Sarah Smith, Smithsoft – Sarah comes to game development with a background in software engineering for companies including Nokia and Google, and with over a decade of mobile development experience, especially in 3D graphics. She built on a love of games since creating Dungeons & Dragons modules on her own web-server while studying for a BSc (Comp Sci) in the late 90’s.
> Joel Styles, Prideful Sloth – A development polymath with over a decade of AAA experience as an artist, programmer and graphics engineer. Joel has contributed to some of gamings biggest franchises such as Bioshock, Elder Scrolls, and Batman. He is a co-founder and director of Prideful Sloth, a micro-AAA studio formed in Brisbane, Australia, focusing on creating high quality console games.
The Innovation Panel includes:
> Sam Hussey, Lightweave – Managing Director at Brisbane-based Lightweave who operate at the forefront of VR experiences and installations.
> Ben Richards, Cutting Edge – Cutting Edge’s Director of Creative Development and Innovation, Ben has worked with the likes of Pixar, Lucasfilm and Weta on such films as Avatar, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and The Incredibles and the prolific gaming studios of Ubisoft and Sony.
Both panels will be moderated by:
> Deb Polson, Senior Lecturer QUT – Deb Polson is a senior academic and independent designer, focused on exploiting unique aspects of new and old technologies to imagine the future of human experience. For over 20 years Deb has been an active member of both the design industry and academy in the fields of game and simulation design, experimenting and innovating in the vibrant intersections of art, design, and science in Australia, China, the US and UK.
