Local writers, directors and producers will develop their concepts for a successful screen series under the guidance of international talent Marco Ramirez, prize-winning screenwriter, producer, playwright and showrunner for Daredevil (Netflix).
Screen Queensland CEO Tracey Vieira will welcome Marco to Queensland for the three-day story workshop (26-28 April), as part of Queensland Originals: First Concepts with AFTRS.
“We are very fortunate to have Marco share his wealth of experience in making a hit drama series with five Queensland teams,” Ms Vieira said.
“Marco has built an impressive résumé of writing and producing credits which include Sons of Anarchy, Orange is the New Black, Fear the Walking Dead, Marvel’s Daredevil and the Netflix series The Defenders.”
Premier and Arts Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk said, “Queensland has a strong relationship with Marvel, and this workshop will give our talented emerging screenwriters a chance to learn from the creator of one its most popular series.”
Ms Vieira named the successful Queensland participants for the workshop:
– Call of the Curlew (Meg O’Connell, Charlie Aspinwall)
– The Rainmaker (Helen Morrison, Suzanne Thompson, Margaret Riseley)
– Gehenna (Shayne Armstrong)
– Frequencies (Darren Paul Fisher, Martha Goddard, Kerrin McNeil)
– Promised Planet (Bronwen Noakes, Roger Monk, Emily Avila)
“Following an application process, these five projects were selected and represent a range of Queensland talent and experience levels with practitioners from Barcaldine, Brisbane, Stanthorpe and Sarina Beach,” Ms Vieira said.
“The First Concepts workshop with Marco Ramirez is part of Screen Queensland’s overall strategy to invest in local talent and develop Queensland stories.”
AFTRS CEO Neil Peplow said that AFTRS will help shape the development workshop, and will work closely with Marco Ramirez to create a plan that can inspire and draw out bold ideas as the concepts are developed.

Queensland Originals: First Concepts with AFTRS is an Australian-first partnership between Screen Queensland (SQ) and the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) to work with international innovators to shape original Queensland stories for global on-demand platforms.
