SCREAM! Queensland a new launchpad for horror filmmakers

Queensland filmmakers across the horror genre can take their work to international audiences with the new initiative SCREAM! Queensland announced today by Screen Queensland CEO Tracey Vieira.

“Screen Queensland is partnering with Screamfest in Los Angeles to offer three Queensland filmmaking teams a chance to develop and produce a short horror film of 8-10 minutes with funding of up to $40,000 per film,” Ms Vieira said.

“SCREAM! Queensland is directed at original, bold and inventive short film projects with a focus on the horror and thriller genre.

“The three completed films, to be produced in Queensland, will premiere in October at Screamfest, the largest and longest running horror film festival in the United States.”

Ms Vieira said Queensland has a history of producing outstanding genre filmmaking talent, including the Spierig brothers (Predestination) and Shane Krause and Shayne Armstrong (Bait, Acolytes) among others.

“Screen Queensland will provide hands-on development assistance and advice to the three successful teams who will then travel to Los Angeles for the world premieres of their short films at Screamfest,” Ms Vieira said.

Premier and Arts Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk said SCREAM! Queensland would help to grow and develop the state’s local talent.

“SCREAM! Queensland is a first in partnering with the prestigious Screamfest to give Queensland filmmakers a chance to show their work on an international platform amongst the best of the horror genre,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

Screamfest Festival Director Rachel Belofsky said, “We are thrilled to partner with Screen Queensland in presenting the exciting new work of Queensland filmmakers at our upcoming festival.”

Screamfest has launched some of the best known horror films in the world includingParanormal Activity.

The festival’s advisory board includes John Carpenter (Halloween), Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist), Roy Lee (The Ring) and Eli Roth (Hostel).

SCREAM! Queensland is part of Q originals, a Screen Queensland initiative to create opportunities for the state’s creative talent to develop standout stories for the screen.

As part of the application, people must submit scripts for short horror films. To apply for Scream! Queensland. Deadline is 31 March 2017.
